In both alchemy and cooking, the mixing of different materials and ingredients together is a form of yoga. In yoga we bring together or unify two things: action and undivided attention. We do just this when we mix ingredients while cooking. Yoga and alchemy also strive for a change that brings us to a place that we have never experienced before. That which was impossible becomes possible. That which was invisible becomes seen. By cultivating this alchemical relationship with our food, through cooking and eating, we become co-creators with ourselves, our surroundings and our communities.
Both of these practices can contribute to our physical and mental wellbeing. The Asanas and the breath work of yoga can ground us and also keep us fit. Cooking with love and mindful consideration is incredibly grounding. This combined with the consumption of high vibration, quality foods can allow us to attain an equilibrium and harmony between our bodies and minds. We can free the mind of negative thoughts and remove toxins from the body. We can increase attention, focus and concentration.
The process of cooking, when practiced in a mindful way, is calming and soothing. It quiets the busy mind and tunes out the voices that we all have in our heads.
The food begs us to be here now.
We utilize all five of our senses to bring us into this present moment, both while preparing it and while ingesting it.
Anything that we do with full concentration and focused mindful attention, it is a form of meditation.
Why not apply it to the practices of cooking and eating?
